Audience and goals

ScreensDo Heathier Children, is an application aimed at parents and tutors of children between 6 and 14 years old.

This application is designed as a tool that mainly helps parents educate their children in healthy habits through the balance between the different activities they perform.

Currently, children carry out lots of activities throughout the day, during school periods and during holiday periods. We, as parents or tutors, should guide them in order that these activities include sports activities, outdoor games, field or mountain trips, reading, studying, etc.and reduce the number of hours that children currently spend sitting in front of the television, computer or video consoles.

This September 2019, the preliminary results of the STEPS study of the Gasol Foundation, conducted on Spanish children, have been presented. This study has detected 35% of children and adolescents with obesity or overweight and 80% of non-compliance in the recommendations on daily hours in front of the ONU weekend screen.

This is a worldwide trend. Screens, in the form of television, video games, youtubers, etc., are eroding the time our children spent on healthier activities.

The activities with screens are tasks that do not require effort, that sensually trap our children and that ultimately create addiction. Forbidden them totally is not a solution, neither viable nor adequate. Further we will delay the use of technologies and the learning of the management of the emotions they cause: desire, anxiety, frustration, etc. We must teach our children to manage these emotions, to moderate their desires for activities with screens and to reduce the anxiety and frustration that they can produce.

The application we present is:

  1. Created so that parents, or tutors, become aware of the time our children are devoting to activities with screens and other activities (for this we keep a MANUAL record of the activities they perform).
  2. Designed for children to accept a negotiated agreement (setting limits) with their parents / tutors on the hours they will devote to screen activities, depending on the time dedicated to other healthier tasks that we will propose (for this, at creating a new child, we can write a list of the objectives and limits that the child will accept as part of the agreement).
  3. Programmed so that both parents and children can objectively visualize how the times of one and other activities are balanced. We will check how the agreements are being fulfilled while the child learns to manage responsibility, habits and emotions (for this, pie-charts and bar-charts reports are generated showing in colors the balance of  time dedicated to the different activities).

May be an App is not necessary to achieve these goals, but our experience confirms that ScreensDo greatly helps to achieve these goals, facilitates communication and acceptance of limits by our children.
